Your Sacred Name

——an Ode to Dearest Teachers

By Liu Changrong

You are rain in the springtime

sprinkling with winds in nights, gently

 and nurturing vast land, quietly.

You are wind blowing summer haze.

With the touch of yours, crops ripen

and plums gradually mature thanks to the timely rain.

You are moon in the Autumn nights

Dancing shadows wander for the moon, while

echo sings back and forth for the fall.

You are snow falling from the winter sky.

The land is covered with snow in layers,

timely and heavily, promising a good harvest.

Nourished by rain and dew, young crops grow.

Fed by land and soil, dreams come true through toil.

Guided by stars in heaven, roads are taken.

Ultimately, the sun shines over all creations.

In the name of heaven, earth, the country, ancestors, and teachers

I call your sacred name.

a name of ancestors afar,

and a name of the sacred that last.

How Could I Forget

When I was a kid,

You saved all precious meat hardly seen in a year for me.

How could I forget to raise and see,

if you had saved yourself some meat?

On the way to school,

you carried me on your back with trousers rolled up high.

Step by step, the rising river was passed by.

How could I forget to lean and see

if you were as afraid as me?

After I grew up,

you packed my traveling bag, again and again

and saw me off mile after mile.

How could I forget to look back

and wipe tears from your eyes

When I got married,

You took off the beloved bracelet passed on from ancestors

and put it on the wrist of the bride.

How could I forget to turn around

and ask if you want to keep it on?

And now,

you are living in the quiet and remote countryside.

Every time I hold your bony hands,

how could I forget to ask,

if you have had any regret?

Lambs would kneel for the breastfeeding of their mums.

Ravens would take the responsibility to feed back their parents.

How would I, and how dare I forget

the devotion,

the affection, and

the earth-shaking love given

   by you, my darling mamma!
